Maybe We'll Keep Our Wii Now. . .

Disc Golf for Wii
The exposure from being attached to a Tiger Woods game is great for the sport, but I hope this leads to a good, stand-alone disc-golf game.

Here are my disc golf scores for the last 3 weeks. I didn't do so well on a few holes, especially last week. I've been overthinking my game, so I need to calm that down and maybe head out to the Davis course to practice putting.

LAS:Collab-Collage002 -- Monsters

Here is the latest collage. The theme this time was monsters.

Unfortunately, I didn't get many pictures sent to me. However, that gave me more time to work on each pic I did get. As you can see, they are heavily edited.

Restaurant Quick Review - Wok of Flame

Location: El Macero Shopping Center (417 Mace Boulevard #H) Davis, CA

This review is based on my take-out experience at the above restaurant. All scores are out of 10.

Final score is based on an average of all scores. Taste is registered twice, any bonus score is not counted toward the final average.

Service (Friendliness): 8
Service (Timeliness): 8

Food - Orange Chicken Lunch Special with Chow Mein and Fried Rice:
Appearance: 6
Quality: 7
Portion Size: 7
Taste: 4

Final: 6

Worth the price?: No. $1-2 more expensive than other chinese lunch specials.

Bonus - Fortune Cookie: 2

I was really rather disappointed with Wok of Flame. I had heard some good things about the restaurant from a few friends and the DavisWiki. I was further encouraged upon entering the restaurant and finding it to be very clean and simply decorated. Unfortunately, when I got back to work and started eating the food, the disappointment set in.

On the plus side, I was very happy to that my chicken was easily identifiable as chicken - tender, well cooked, chicken breast. It wasn't over tenderized, over breaded, or over cooked. Unfortunately the chunks of chicken were way too big, some 2 or or 3 bites. Also, the orange sauce was mostly just bland, not spicy at all (this was supposedly one of their spicy dishes), and had huge slivers of orange peel that were quite disgusting. I enjoy a little bit of orange or lemon zest, but these slivers were so large I thought they were peices of chow mein noodle. Having a slightly orangy, extremely bitter taste every few bites was just not pleasant.

On to the chow mein. It was just okay. Again, well cooked, but also very bland. The noodles were quite dark, so before actually tasting it, I was very worried that it had been oversaturated with soy sauce. It didn't seem to be unless their soy sauce is just extremely bland as well.

The fried rice was probably the best part of the dish. The appearance was a little off putting as the rice was very yellow making me think that maybe it was a yellow curried rice. But it was quite pleasantly flavored and not too oily, as sometimes fried rice tends to be.

I don't think I will eat at this restaurant again. The food wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good either. I didn't throw out my meal, and didn't feel I needed to return it or complain about it. I just don't think it's for me. (Except for the fortune cookie, I wish I had given that back or thrown it out. It was pretty bad.)

Disc Golf Scores 041909

This is my score card for this weekends disc golf games. I've always wanted to put my scores for disc golf and bowling in a blog so I have a good way to keep track of how well (or badly) I've done and see if I am improving.

Disc golfing is one of the greatest sports ever invented. My family has been playing for about 15 years I think, though not regularly. About 3 or 4 years ago, I decided to pick it back up and introduce my wife to it and we have played every summer since. Last summer we didn't play much though because gas was too expensive to justify the drive all the way out to Rocklin.

Why Rocklin? Because Rocklin has the most fun course in the area (for us anyway). There are a few other courses in the area, but we like Rocklin the best. The most popular course is Shady Oaks Park in Orangevale. You can find a lot of really skilled players there and a great pro shop for buying new equipment. The course can be a lot of fun too, but if you are not a fairly accurate player, you may lose a lot of discs there. Also the course is often extremely crowded.

What is disc golf? I don't think I'm very good at explaining it, so check out this link to get a basic understanding of the sport.

Why is it a great sport?
1.Disc golf is probably one of the cheapest sports there is. Discs average about $8-$15 each and you can play just fine using only 1-3 discs.
2.If you go with someone who has played a bit before or if you join or even just watch a more experienced player, you can learn how to play pretty quickly.
3.As with regular golf, you don't have to be competitive with the people in your group, and you will probably be more interested in just improving your own game so it can be a quite relaxing sport. But if you get angry and decide to bend your equipment over your knee, your plastic disc won't be destroyed, it will just return to more or less its original state.
4. The courses are usually placed in and around parks and are all about respecting the nature of the park. We like Rocklin because there is a good mix of wooded and clear areas and it can feel like your playing in a forest - Shady Oaks in Orangevale is even more forest like. If you want to go experience "the great outdoors" without having to go camping, play a round of disc golf.
5. Disc golf is pretty good exercise - you have to do quite a bit of walking (if you go to De La Veaga in Santa Cruz, you hike a lot as well) and it involves all your major muscle groups.
6. It's not particularly vigorous and you will probably have to wait for groups ahead of you, so you can have a lot of conversation with the people you're playing with.

So I say to you, go and play a round if the opportunity arises. It's a lot of fun.

Not your elementary school jump rope.

I'm putting this video here for my wife. She used to do this kind of thing. I don't know what you call it, but she was some sort of performing jump roper. She can still do some of the tricks when she practices. Maybe if we lose our jobs she could teach me the tricks and we could go on the road as a jump-roping duo. . . Lol - I keed.

LAS:Collab-Collage001

Here is the 2-weeks late collage I promised all of you. (Click the image for full size.) Thank you very much for contributing! Every picture here was sent to me from a cell phone. A few of the pics (the flowers, duckies and bike tire) I've added artistic filters to, and a few others I've made minor touch-ups. I did not include every picture I received - a couple asked that their pics not be uploaded to the internet and a few others sent me more than one pic so I fit as many as I could.

I am planning another collab-collage for the end of this month. Perhaps you would like to suggest a theme.

Invisible Qualities Clearly Seen

I have two videos for this post.

1) Leaf Cutter Ant Colony

2) Freezing Frogs

I'm not sure I should think this is funny. . .

. . . but I really, really do.
