I was really rather disappointed with Wok of Flame. I had heard some good things about the restaurant from a few friends and the DavisWiki. I was further encouraged upon entering the restaurant and finding it to be very clean and simply decorated. Unfortunately, when I got back to work and started eating the food, the disappointment set in.

On the plus side, I was very happy to that my chicken was easily identifiable as chicken - tender, well cooked, chicken breast. It wasn't over tenderized, over breaded, or over cooked. Unfortunately the chunks of chicken were way too big, some 2 or or 3 bites. Also, the orange sauce was mostly just bland, not spicy at all (this was supposedly one of their spicy dishes), and had huge slivers of orange peel that were quite disgusting. I enjoy a little bit of orange or lemon zest, but these slivers were so large I thought they were peices of chow mein noodle. Having a slightly orangy, extremely bitter taste every few bites was just not pleasant.

On to the chow mein. It was just okay. Again, well cooked, but also very bland. The noodles were quite dark, so before actually tasting it, I was very worried that it had been oversaturated with soy sauce. It didn't seem to be unless their soy sauce is just extremely bland as well.

The fried rice was probably the best part of the dish. The appearance was a little off putting as the rice was very yellow making me think that maybe it was a yellow curried rice. But it was quite pleasantly flavored and not too oily, as sometimes fried rice tends to be.

I don't think I will eat at this restaurant again. The food wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good either. I didn't throw out my meal, and didn't feel I needed to return it or complain about it. I just don't think it's for me. (Except for the fortune cookie, I wish I had given that back or thrown it out. It was pretty bad.)
