This is my score card for this weekends disc golf games. I've always wanted to put my scores for disc golf and bowling in a blog so I have a good way to keep track of how well (or badly) I've done and see if I am improving.Disc golfing is one of the greatest sports ever invented. My family has been playing for about 15 years I think, though not regularly. About 3 or 4 years ago, I decided to pick it back up and introduce my wife to it and we have played every summer since. Last summer we didn't play much though because gas was too expensive to justify the drive all the way out to Rocklin.
Why Rocklin? Because Rocklin has the most fun course in the area (for us anyway). There are a few other courses in the area, but we like Rocklin the best. The most popular course is Shady Oaks Park in Orangevale. You can find a lot of really skilled players there and a great pro shop for buying new equipment. The course can be a lot of fun too, but if you are not a fairly accurate player, you may lose a lot of discs there. Also the course is often extremely crowded.
What is disc golf? I don't think I'm very good at explaining it, so check out this link to get a basic understanding of the sport.
Why is it a great sport?
1.Disc golf is probably one of the cheapest sports there is. Discs average about $8-$15 each and you can play just fine using only 1-3 discs.
2.If you go with someone who has played a bit before or if you join or even just watch a more experienced player, you can learn how to play pretty quickly.
3.As with regular golf, you don't have to be competitive with the people in your group, and you will probably be more interested in just improving your own game so it can be a quite relaxing sport. But if you get angry and decide to bend your equipment over your knee, your plastic disc won't be destroyed, it will just return to more or less its original state.
4. The courses are usually placed in and around parks and are all about respecting the nature of the park. We like Rocklin because there is a good mix of wooded and clear areas and it can feel like your playing in a forest - Shady Oaks in Orangevale is even more forest like. If you want to go experience "the great outdoors" without having to go camping, play a round of disc golf.
5. Disc golf is pretty good exercise - you have to do quite a bit of walking (if you go to De La Veaga in Santa Cruz, you hike a lot as well) and it involves all your major muscle groups.
6. It's not particularly vigorous and you will probably have to wait for groups ahead of you, so you can have a lot of conversation with the people you're playing with.
So I say to you, go and play a round if the opportunity arises. It's a lot of fun.
